THE BOYZ (Hangul: 더보이즈), is a South Korean boy group created by Cre.ker Entertainment. The group debuted with 12 members: Sangyeon, Jacob, Younghoon, Hyunjae, Juyeon, Kevin, New, Q, Ju Haknyeon, Hwall, Sunwoo, and Eric.
On October 2019, Cre.ker Entertainment announced the departure of Hwall from the group due to health reasons.
History[]
Pre-debut[]
On July 7, Cre.ker Entertainment announced their plans to debut a boy group which they tentatively called Cre.kerz. [1]
On July 18, their official name, THE BOYZ, was revealed on a teaser posted on the group's social media account. [2]
From July 18 to 21, Cre.ker Entertainment unveiled the profile members along with their profile films by Dazed. On July 18, Ju Haknyeon, Hyunjae, and Sunwoo were announced as the first three members. The next three members, Younghoon, Hwall, and Kevin were announced on July 19. Sangyeon, Juyeon, and New were announced on July 20. Q, Jacob, and Eric, the final three members were announced on July 21. [3]
On July 22, the group held their first V Live broadcast featuring all members. Later that day, they met with fans at Blue Square in Hannam and U-Plex Plaza in Sinchon. [4]
On July 23, a clip featuring the group was released. [5]
On July 24, it was announced that the group would star in their pre-debut reality show Flower Snack. [6] On August 9, a teaser featuring Ju Haknyeon, Hwall, Sunwoo, and Eric was released. Another teaser was released on August 10 featuring Hyunjae, Younghoon, Juyeon, and Kevin. A third teaser was released on August 11 featuring Sangyeon, Jacob, Q, and New. A fourth and final teaser was released on August 16. [7]
On August 20, the first episode of Flower Snack, their first reality show aired, which ran for 8 episodes. [8] The show ended on October 11.
2017-2018: Debut with The First, The Start, The Sphere, and The Only[]
On December 6, The Boyz officially debuted with the release of their first ep The First and its lead single "Boy". From February 12 to March 15, their second reality show The 100 aired on V Live. As the result of this show, they held an online mini-concert on March 23. The Boyz were invited to perform at the 12th Asian Film Awards on March 17 in Macau, their first overseas performance.[9]
The group released their second ep The Start and its lead single "Giddy Up" on April 3, 2018. Due to health problems, Hwall couldn't promote with the group and subsequently had to halt all activities for three months.[10]
The twelve members, with Hwall back from his hiatus, released a special digital single titled "Keeper" on July 12, which was produced by Block B's Park Kyung. On July 24, they won their first "Rookie Award" during the Korea Brand Awards.
The group appeared on the reality show Happy Arrived At Our House that aimed to raise awareness of the problem of abandoned street dogs in Korea. They temporarily took care of two puppies until they were found a home.
On August 30, the group won another "Rookie Award" at the Soribada Best K-Music Awards. On September 5, they made their first comeback in 5 months with the single The Sphere and the song "Right Here".
On September 28, Q was announced as the last dancer to join the Main Dancers of Hallyu, along with other main dancers from boy groups including MONSTA X's Shownu, GOT7's Yugyeom, Seventeen's Hoshi, NCT's Taeyong and NU'EST W's JR.
The group released their third extended play The Only and its lead single "No Air" on November 29, 2018.
On December 1, the group won another "Best New Male Artist Award" at the 2018 Melon Music Awards.
2019: Bloom Bloom, Dreamlike, Japanese debut, and Hwall's departure[]
The group released their second single album Bloom Bloom and its lead single "Bloom Bloom" on April 29.
On May 7, The Boyz received their first-ever music show win on SBS MTV's The Show.
The group released their fourth extended play Dreamlike and its lead single "D.D.D" on August 19.
On October 23, Hwall officially left the group due to health issues.[11]
On November 6, The Boyz officially debuted in Japan with the release of their first Japanese ep Tattoo and its lead single "Tattoo".
On December 6, the group released a special digital single titled "White (화이트)" to commemorate their second anniversary. Between December 11 and 20, the group toured in Berlin, Paris, London, and Amsterdam as part of their European tour titled Dreamlike.
2020: Reveal, Road to Kingdom, and Chase[]
On February 10, the group released their first studio album Reveal and its lead single "Reveal".
On March 20, it was announced that the group will join Mnet's reality television competition Road to Kingdom.[12] On June 12, they released their new song "Checkmate" for the show's finale. The group eventually finished in first place, winning the show and securing a spot in upcoming Mnet program Kingdom.[13]
On September 21, the group released their fifth extended play Chase and its lead single "The Stealer". During promotions, The Boyz received four music show wins: once on MBC's Show Champion, twice on Mnet's M Countdown and once on SBS MTV's The Show.
At the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards, it was announced that The Boyz (who won Road to Kingdom) would be joining ATEEZ and Stray Kids on the inaugural season of Kingdom, a Mnet competition show.[14]
On December 7, the group released a special digital single titled "Christmassy!", to commemorate their third anniversary with ‘The Azit: 永華’ promotions.
2021: Breaking Dawn, Kingdom: Legendary War, Thrill-ing, Maverick, and transfer to IST Entertainment[]
On January 12, it was announced that the group will release their first Japanese studio album Breaking Dawn on March 17.
On July 11, The Boyz released the promotional single "Drink It" through Universe Music for the mobile application, Universe.
On August 9, The Boyz returned with their sixth extended play Thrill-ing with the lead single "Thrill Ride".
On November 1, they made a comeback with their third single album Maverick, and not long afterward, on November 11, their previous agency, Cre.ker, and Apink and VICTON's agency, Play M Entertainment, merged into one company which is now known as IST Entertainment, which was officially registered on November 19.
The members New and Juyeon will be active DJs on KBS Cool FM 'STATION Z' broadcasting at midnight starting on October 10 and will host every Sunday for 4 weeks
On December 6, they released with their fourth special single "Candles" as part of their special ‘The Azit: Field Day’ promotions to celebrate their fourth anniversary.
2022-present: Eric's hiatus, She's The Boss, Sweet, Whisper[]
On March 2, 2022, THE BOYZ participated in the OST for the Webtoon Solo Leveling with the release of the song "Echo".
On March 4, it was announced by IST Entertainment that Eric would be going on a hiatus to focus on recovering due to health issues. As a result, the group will be promoting as 10 members until his return.
On March 30, THE BOYZ announced their world tour THE BOYZ World Tour: THE B-ZONE.
On May 27, THE BOYZ released their second Japanese mini album She's The Boss.
On June 17, they released their second digital single "Sweet", which is the 21st release of the UNIVERSE Music project.
On August 16, the group (with the absence of Eric due to his hiatus) released their 7th Mini Album "Be Aware" with the title track "WHISPER".
On August 30, it was announced by IST Entertainment that Sunwoo will be going on a temporary hiatus to focus on recovering due to health issues.
On September 16, IST Entertainment announced that Eric and Sunwoo will return from their hiatus and will join the groups future activities.
On October 7, THE BOYZ participated in a collaboration with Raiden and T1's League of Legends team 'Oner', 'Faker' and 'Gumayusi' with the release of T1's theme song track "Last Man Standing".
On November 6, THE BOYZ wraps up their world tour THE BOYZ World Tour: THE B-ZONE in Tokyo, Japan.
On December 6, THE BOYZ released a very special single "All About You" alongside with their 2 day online and offline fancon "THE B-Road" to celebrate the group's 5th Anniversary!
